some stuff About CApe town, the cape peninsula and the western cape:

South Africa’s second largest city – and what a city it is – is not known as one of the world’s premier tourist destinations for nothing. It’s affectionately known as Slaapstad (Sleepy town) by many locals and has so much to offer.

Mountains: our magnificent, towering Table Mountain is far more than just a photo opp. It’s littered with beautiful, scenic hiking trails (and some tough climbs for the more intrepid amongst us, me not included), dams, waterfalls, forests, birds and other wildlife. It’s part of a spectacular 50km range from Cape Point to Signal Hill, that includes Lion’s Head, Devil’s Peak, Silvermine and the 12 Apostles guarding over Caps Bay and the Atlantic seaboard.

We have more mountains slightly further afield too: the Hottentots Holland, Kogelberg, and the Overberg and Winelands regions with the Drakenstein mountains and the Langeberg Range.

Beaches: Oh, so many gorgeous beaches. Some secluded and perfect for a lazy float or secret getaway, like Boulders and Seaforth and Fisherman’s beach in Simonstown and Smitswinkel Bay; others with tidal pools, like St James and Dalebrook. Then we have the surf spots: Muizenburg, Danger Beach, Llandudno, Long Beach, Glen Beach and Big Bay plus some other really challenging ones. I’d be remiss not to mention Clifton (all the Cliftons), Hout Bay and Camp’s Bay, which, like Llandudno, get really packed. Swimming there is a bit of a challenge as the water is ICY, even in mid summer. This is thanks to the Cold Benguela Current (we learnt about it in primary school).

Fishhoek, Muizenburg and the other beaches in False Bay are much warmer and you can actually have a bit of a leisurely swim there (just watch out for Great White and other sharks, eek!). Those are just the Peninsula ones – we have many, many more all the way up the West and South Coasts.
